Symptoms of less effective teams

Many teams struggle to continually perform at high levels of effectiveness and efficiency because of the knife-edge balance of that state of "effective teamwork". It is inevitable that with the complexities of the current business environment some short term instability and deviation from that teamwork "nirvana" will happen.

Some teams have the structure and systems in place to monitor team performance and recognise when readjustment is necessary to return to an effective equilibrium.

Unfortunately, not all teams have that acuity to notice when behaviours and practice are moving away from the ideal and, unless an appropriate intervention is made, some, if not all of the following symptoms can quickly take hold:
  1. The team is not meeting some or all of its performance targets
  2. The team delivers its task but has difficult and strained internal relationships
  3. The team has outstanding internal relationships but fails to deliver on some or all of its primary tasks
  4. Individual team members function with their own agendas in mind so destabilising the team
  5. Team performance is sabotaged by individuals who agree one thing but either fail to deliver or do another
  6. Team culture is too cosy because of strong support with little challenge
  7. Team culture is too stressful because of high challenge with little support
  8. Team performance has stagnated because the team is neither supported or challenged
  9. New team responsibilities are added without making room by discarding outdated ones
  10. Everything is a priority
